About the Artist
My Story
Mary Evans was born and raised in Bethel NC, a small town in eastern NC, outside of the larger Greenville area. Her interest in art started at an early age. She was always drawn to painting and drawing. She received a BA in Psychology from Meredith College, and a MS from UNC Chapel Hill in therapeutic recreation. She went on to practice at UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest Baptist Hospitals.

In 1998 she started her business, Larkspur Lane Antiques and Art, selling antique furniture and paintings. She sold antiques at a variety of antique shows up and down the East coast including shows in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington DC, Georgia, and Massachusetts. In 2006 she began selling her own works as an extension of her antique business. Her works at that time were pieces that reflected the “American Fancy Period” from 1790 to 1840. These works were paired with antiques from the same time period as potential pairings. During this time she participated in the Country Folk Art show in Marlborough, Massachusetts. In 2009 she designed and painted items for Old Salem in Winston Salem, N.C.
In 2009 she returned to Eastern NC, and it was at this time that she began formal training in oil painting with Clara Flanagan at Wilson County Community College. She then studied at Barton College with J. Chris Wilson. Her formal training continued with Ben Bridgers, Maureen O'Neil, Susan Fecho, Benjamin Hawley, and Ginny Lassiter. She is currently enjoying working with Steve Benton. Her training has been in oils and pastels. She enjoys landscape painting as well as still life painting.
There have been many “forever artists” that have been lifelong influences on her work. There are too many to name them all, but here are just a few of the many…
